Jewelers.Community Interview: BDBD Bead Designs by Debbie

This interview, with BDBD Bead Designs by Debbie, is from August 2016

1. Tell us a little about yourself

I have 2 wonderful children whom I am very proud of, both college graduates. I am married to my best friend and loving every minute of it. My other passion is horses. We have 2 beautiful Arabian horses that are my other children along with our 2 cats.

2. What is your “inspiration story” — where did your interest in jewelry all begin?

I have always been a crafty person which I got from my mother and older sister. Many years ago I thought I would try my hand at making jewelry with beads. I did and really liked it, but at that time I was working full time and raising my children so I really didn’t have the time to invest in to make jewelry. In 2011, with the children grown and off to college, I began to make jewelry once again, and sold my jewelry to friends and family members. In 2012, with 24 years as a NC State Employee, it was time for me to retire. Since retirement doesn’t pay that great, I began my own small business, BDBD Bead Designs by Debbie out of my home.

3. What is your dream project?

A seed bead project. I haven’t quite got the hang of that yet. I envy those who can create such wonderful pieces of art with seed beads.

4. What has been your greatest challenge so far and how did you overcome it?

Charm bracelets, though they look easy to do, they can be very tricky. I am a perfectionist and if the beads or charms do not lay just right, I get frustrated. How did I overcome it? Practice, practice, practice.

5. What is the greatest gift that jewelry-making has given you?

A sense of pride and accomplishment. I love what I do and love what I create!

6. What words of wisdom do you have for someone beginning to make jewelry?

There are no set rules to making jewelry creations. Any design in your mind is possible!
